The site of RAF Blackgang is actually around half a mile inland above the cliffs at St Catherine’s - being 470 feet above sea level. This type of radar station was known as a Type 8F. It provided a ground controlled interception function from 1942 onwards.
It was a completely different style and separate system from those of Niton and St. Lawrence. The original Type 8F used a beam splitting technique. Various other systems were later installed, working hand-in-hand with the mother station at Tangmer.
