Born in Flanders in 1565 in the town of Beveren but moved around a great deal to overcome religious persecution. Latterly he moved to Amsterdam and became professor of mathematics and a librarian at Leydon University. His cartographer skills were put to good use in the editions of Ptolemy's Geographia (based on Mercator's edition of 1578) .
