This is a copper plate engraving hand coloured, engraved by Leonard Terwoort, from Antwerp in the Netherlands. It was published around 1575 by the London map makers Christopher Saxton and denotes Hantshire, Southampton and the WIght.
Christopher Saxton in 1574 received a charter from Elizabeth I dated 16th July, commissioning Saxton to travel the length and breadth of England and create maps in order to identify the whole of the territory more accurately. Eventually 34 maps were created and published in 1579 in an atlas of England and Wales.
