Freshwater Redoubt

REF NR: 21

1. Constructed to defend Freshwater Bay, this redoubt cover the whole of the beach landing area which offered a really good place to land troops in good weather thus needed to be protected.  The landward approach to the redoubt is protected by a deep brick lined ditch and is a formidable to any foe trying to rush the fort. On the seaward side, high chalk cliffs again offer a suitably impossible challenge to any invading army.  The redoubt is entered finally by crossing over a drawbridge that is flanked on by a large two-storey caponier giving covering fire over the entrance.
