History Air Crashes of WWII

Allied - Spitfire DP845

REF NR: 1941

An interesting yet unconfirmed emergency landing due to engine trouble of a prototype Spitfire, thought to be from Boscombe Down at Apse Heath. The private notes of H.J T Leal being addressed and interpreted by Gilliam suggest that this aircraft was indeed a prototype Spitfire fitted with the new Griffon engine. It also suggests that since there were no reports of damage on the 5th May incurred in this emergency landing, that the aircraft was duly put back into test mode without delay. Latterly, it was to become the first F Mk XII  Spitfire.
