History Air Crashes of WWII

Allied - Hurricane P3681

REF NR: 1911

The first IOW Hurricane crash of the war occurred after engaging a fleet of Heinkel He111s attacking Portsmouth and Tangmere airfields. Flight Sgt. A W Wooley’s  Hurricane from 601 Squadron managed to bail out, although injured and floated down near Thorness Bay. The aircraft continued on for a mile or so and finally crashed into a garden in Cranmore just outside of Yarmouth town.

Many years later, a retro dig of the site found many parts of the aircraft still there. The Merlin engine was recovered, cleaned and placed on display at the original base that the aircraft had departed from at Tangmere.
