History Air Crashes of WWII

REF NR: 1917

The 16th August 1940 saw more attacks on the South Hampshire airfields of Tangmere, Gosport, Lee on Solent and the Radar Station at Ventnor. Flying Officer C A Woods-Scawen of 43 Squadron engaged the enemy around 1pm. The following the brush with the German escorts, he sustained heavy damage and proceeded to crash land just outside Newport at Horsebridge Hill at around 13:40hrs, where the craft burst into flames. The pilot however managed to make his escape with only minor injuries.
