Blackgang 1878

REF NR: 1619

1: Beyond Niton, we come to the Black Gang Chine, a grim abyss, over whose frowning edge a stream spills its wavering torrent into the surging vortex below, where the restless ocean forever foams and thunders. From here, by coach or on foot, sometimes by the margin of lofty sea-cliffs, sometimes by the most home-like and tidy farmhouses and hamlets imaginable, we come to Brixton. Frequently, in the green lanes, one meets groups of flaxen-haired, plump-cheeked, and rosy urchins and girlikins, such as Birket Foster delights to paint - the future hope and strength of the land of Shakspeare and Cromwell.
