During the creation of Castle Close, the station was dismantled, but the main station building was saved and converted into several apartments; the side of the building that had fronted the platform is now facing onto Castle Close.
After opening a temporary terminus at St Lawrence in 1897, the railway continued on to its permanent destination, Ventnor Town (as it was previously known), in 1900. The station had two platforms, but the one closest to the upstream end of the railway was never used because there were no structures there.
Due to its location one mile west of the town centre, the Southern Railway renamed the station Ventnor West on 9.7.1923. The Southern Railway demoted most stations to unstaffed halts over time, while Ventnor West kept its crew despite consistently low passenger volumes. Despite its elevated location, the Ventnor Station on the Isle of White Railway was a more convenient and speedier means to reach the town from Ryde.
The station’s goods yard was serviced by many sidings and a coal road in addition to a lengthy loop dock road equipped with an inspection pit and water tank.
