Ref Number: 0061
Temporary housing was all that was available when Ventnor Station opened in 1866 on the site of a working quarry. Local merchants were housed in underground tunnels and finally a permanent station was constructed, complete with a huge goods yard, three sidings and a coal pit. The station had three platform faces on two island platforms, while only having two passenger roadways. A massive goods shed was located at the far end of the platform, which occupied the fourth and final face of the platform.
The station has long since been demolished, and the only remnants are the tunnel portal within a Southern Water property and few chambers constructed in the quarry face by local merchants. The proprietors of several of the factories utilise them to this day.
