The "Upstart" being a now decommisioned and obsolete submarine wassunk as a sonar/Asdic target
Ref Number: 00170
Most of HMS Upstart’s wartime service was spent operating off the southern French coast, where she was responsible for sinking the French fishing boats Grotte de Bethlehem and Torpille, the German auxiliary minelayer Niedersachsen (the former French Guyane), and the German merchant Tolentino (the former French Saumur). She also attempted to attack the French trader Medjerda and the Italian merchant Pascoli, but she was unsuccessful in both attempts.
After the war, she was lent to the Greek Navy in 1945 and given the name Amfitriti to reflect her new home country. She spent seven years in the Greek Navy before returning to the British Navy in 1952. Off the coast of the Isle of Wight, she was sunk on July 29 as an ASDIC target.
She lies on the seabed, very much intact – other than the bridge and conning tower as she is only 35mm deep.
