The Serrana, a British steamship of 3,677 tonnes, was on her way from London to Barbados when it was attacked. On January 22, 1918, UB-35’s Oberleutnant zur Zed Karl Stoeter torpedoed her. Three crew members were killed in the attack, and two more were lost when they attempted to flee ship in the chaos that ensued. The Serrana was towed by a police boat, but she broke her back when she ran aground on Bridge Reef. The ship’s stern broke off and floated for some 500 yards before sinking in the Solent.
The front and back have been blown up, but the wreckage still lies largely intact on the ocean floor. The ship’s rear deck cannon and triple expansion, three-cylinder steam engine are both submerged towards the ship’s stern.
