The marriage bore a total of six offspring, and in the year 1860, the family established their residence on the Isle of Wight. Following the acquisition of a camera as a present about 1863, she proceeded to repurpose a chicken coop into a dedicated studio space and a coal bin into a darkroom facility, therefore commencing her venture into portrait photography.
Included on her list of subjects were notable individuals such as the esteemed poets Alfred Lord Tennyson and Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, the renowned astronomer Sir John Herschel, the esteemed writer Thomas Carlyle, and the esteemed scientist Charles Darwin. Of particular significance during this era are the artist’s adept portrayals of feminine aesthetics, shown by her depictions of the actress Ellen Terry and Julia Jackson, the latter being her niece and the future mother of renowned writer Virginia Woolf.
