Ref Number: 00151
Originally the French warship Invincible, a third-rate vessel with 74 guns was launched in 1744 at Rochefort, subequently was captured by the British at the first Battle of Finisterre in 1747.
In February of 1758, she was part of a fleet sent to Canada to aid in the defeat of the French there. The command was issued to begin lowering the boat. After first refusing to release the anchor, she eventually did so, only to find that her hawser was caught on the wrong side of the bow and would not let her be catted or securing the anchor. Subsequently, the ship’s rudder jammed and she grounded on Horse Tail Sands, listing to the port side, despite her best efforts to steer her away.
By day three, all four of her chain pumps had broken, and the flooding in her hold had forced the transfer of supplies and guns to Hoys in an effort to lighten her. On February 22, 1758, she was entirely wrecked when she capsized in rough seas and landed on her port beam ends.
