A forced landing occurred at Bathingbourne Farm when a German Messerschmitt that had taken off from its Rennes base encountered Spitfires from 234 Squadron and was forced to land between Apse Heath and The Fighting Cocks tavern. This is believed to have become one of the most visited wrecks on the island after it was recovered and set on exhibit at the Newport Fire Station headquarters to raise funds for “The Local Spitfire Fund.”

Its pilot, F/W Christia Hansen, escaped unharmed after being apprehended by local farm labourers, given a drink in the local pub, and then arrested by the local Arreton constable.
