During a bombing mission over Portsmouth, this bomber, which belonged to 3/KG106 and took off from Chateaudum, was struck by anti-aircraft fire and sustained rudder damage. It jettisoned its explosive cargo and flew back across the island while attempting to return to its home base. It sustained anti-aircraft fire, which resulted in another strike and the destruction of its port engine, forcing the aircraft to fly at a perilously low altitude.

The fog and rain made it exceedingly difficult to see the terrain below, causing the aircraft to crash into Wroxall copse at approximately 19:00 hours. The local militia arrived on the scene very swiftly. Three crew members were transported to a hospital, but sadly Uffzas E. Ostereich succumbed to his injuries.
