The first enemy aircraft to crash land on the Island in WWII at St Lawrence - 8/8/40
Ref Number: 00227
On August 8, 1940, a hostile aircraft made St. Lawrence on the island its permanent its home after making an emergency landing there during World War II. After engaging in combat with the 145 Squadron Hurricane P3896 P/O PL Parrot, which had taken off from Westhampton at 16:15 hours, the Stuka subsequently started its descent. The Junkers’ plane went down at St. Lawrence close to the west of the chute. Despite coming to a stop in a tree, it did not do a significant amount of damage to the surrounding area. After that, the aeroplane was collected by road trailer so that information and intel on this type of aircraft could be gathered.
Unfortunately, Unterffizir Schubert, the pilot, passed away but Uffz Pittroff, his crewman, managed to live and was captured by the enemy.
