William Cooke’s plate of Fernhill Circa 1808 and published in ‘A new picture of the Isle of Wight, illustrated with thirty-six plates of the most beautiful and interesting views throughout the island in initiation of the original sketches’. All the plates are hand drawn and this early guide became a firm favourite of vistors to the island.
The Right Hon. Thomas Orde-Powlett, who in 1797 was named Lord Bolton and who served as Governor of the Isle of Wight from 1791 and 1807, commissioned the construction of the home around the tail end of the 18th century. Sadly the house was destroyed by fire in June 1938.
