Ref Number: 00418
By command of the Royal Commission 1859 the battery at cliff end above Fort Albert was constructed.
Ref Number: 00418
The position was supposed to hold a twenty gun barbette battery, however the land had too much nourishment and was unfit for the guns. As a result, the second option of 9″ cannons was already obsolete by the time the third option of 10 powerful 12.5inch guns was installed in 1877. A tunnel to far-off Fort Albert was begun in the years that followed, as did tests with searchlights and modifications to the guns.
Now mostly demolished, yet still discernible among the vacation cottages.
