Freshwater, the Needles, and Alum Bay are nearly separated from the rest of the island by the river Yar, which originates behind the hills known as Freshwater Gate and empties into the sea at Yarmouth. Thus, it only takes a few yards to traverse the entire island.
This portion of the Isle of Wight is especially susceptible to change due to its geological composition. The majority of the rocks are composed of chalk and flint. The weaker portions of the chalk are frequently swept away by the sea or heavy rainfall, leaving behind the flints and the harder portion of the chalk. Numerous caverns and chines have been excavated in this manner, creating the peculiar isolated boulders at the Needles and Freshwater Gate, as well as the numerous caves and cliffs. For as long as the island continues to exist, numerous additional alterations will occur in this manner.
