Ref Number: 00111
The pier’s head was twice as broad as the promenade going up to it, giving it a “paddle shaped” design and making it 370 feet long. There was a tiny restaurant, gift store, and cafe on the pier, and a drink of water was only 1d.
The 23rd of July, 1909, when the 9,060 tonne German ship Derfflinger crashed into the Shingle Bank two and a half miles from Alum Bay, was one of the busiest days ever at the pier. People on the dock watched as she got stuck for two days before being freed by the neighbouring tugs.
