Somerton airfield saw another air accident towards the end of 1944, when a Tiger Moth had a flying accident on take off.
Ref Number: 00217
Near the end of 1944, a Tiger Moth that was attempting to take off from Somerton airport was involved in a flying mishap that resulted in a crash. In spite of the poor weather circumstances, the two-person crew of a Tiger Moth belonging to the 41st Squadron and stationed at Lympne in Kent attempted to take off. As a consequence, the aircraft was forced to land on its belly.
Fortunately, nobody was wounded, and the incident is not really noted in any crash report filed that day; nevertheless, a report of a Tiger Moth II with the registration N9204 was recorded on the 24th of January 1944 under circumstances that were extremely similar to those of the incident. As a direct consequence of this, there is considerable uncertainty over the precise time when this event took place.
