Allied – Spitfire Mk V AD504

This fighter made an emergency landing on the St. Lawrence road close to Belvedere, which is located in the vicinity of Ventnor. Unfortunately, the Pilot, Flt. Lt. D. W. Wainwright, received serious injuries and had to be taken to the Royal National Hospital at St. Lawrence. Soon after that, he succumbed to his injuries and died.

The plane, which was one of the ” Presentation” planes and was given the name “Notts Miner,” was purchased with the money donated by miners from Nottinghamshire Districts and paid for with their contributions.
