Ref Number: 00210
This Spitfire piloted by P/O W. S. Williams of Tangmere 266 Squadron was severely damaged after engaging a large enemy force that was attacking multiple Portsmouth and Ventnor Radar station targets south of the Isle of Wight. Although initially reported as shot down, it was subsequently determined that P/O W. S. Williams had landed his damaged aircraft in the Bembridge field.
Upon landing, he was able to exit the aircraft before it erupted into flames and was utterly obliterated.
The day culminated in the loss of numerous allied aircraft, the majority of which crashed into the English Channel or the Solent.
