The landing was somewhat odd and hap hazard due to the fact that at 12:20 hours, the aircraft, which was flown by one of the four Sergeants who were on board, was returning somewhat shot up from a raid on Maupertius Airfield near Cherbourg, where it had been severely damaged by flak* during the mission.
The port engine was now the only one still operational as they struggled back across the Island to a nearby airfield that could assist them, Lee on Solent.
However, due to an unexpected change of circumstances, they were forced to make an emergency landing in a field near Quarr Abbey on their route to Elanor’s Grove.
Sgt. S. W. Wood was taken to Ryde County Hospital, while the other three crew members being Sgts H. Pilkington, H. S Fidge and G. W. Sivell all came away with only minor injuries.
