After engaging a squadron of Heinkel He111s attacking the airfields at Portsmouth and Tangmere, the first IOW Hurricane crash of the war occurred. Despite being disabled, Flight Sgt. A. W. Wooley’s 601 Squadron Hurricane managed to bail out and land near Thorness Bay. Just outside of Yarmouth, the plane continued for about a mile before plummeting into a garden in Cranmore.
Numerous aircraft components remained on the site when it was excavated again many years later. The aircraft’s Merlin engine was recovered, polished, and displayed at the Tangmere base from which it had originally taken off.
