The South Hampshire airfields of Tangmere, Gosport, Lee on Solent, and Ventnor Radar Station were attacked again on August 16, 1940. Around 1pm, Flying Officer C. A. Woods-Scawen of 43 Squadron engaged the enemy.
After colliding with the German escorts, he incurred severe damage and proceeded to crash land just outside Newport at Horsebridge Hill at approximately 13:40hrs, where the aircraft caught fire.
However, the pilot managed to flee with only minor injuries.
