Pilot Officer J Ashton had a lucky escape from his aircraft after crashing at Ashey into a disused chalk pit*. There appears to be confusion regarding the actual serial number of this aircraft. Andrew Gilliam attempts to rectify this error in his book “Wight Air Wrecks” with the following statement:
“Previous works have listed this machine as P2683; however, P2683 is recorded as being lost in France in May 1940. This error may well have risen through the loss on the same day of R2683.”
