This Avro Anson K6246 was the first allied aircraft to have creshed on the island during World War II. The Anson of 48 Squadron was flying routinely from Thorney Island when the returning from convoy patrol crashed into St Catherine’s Down near the Hermitage, north-west of Whitwell.
Unfortunatly, only one member of a crew of four survived: Aircraftsman C.M. Ritter. He was extracted from the wreckage and transported to Ryde Hospital with life-threatening injuries.
