The existing church, situated on the southern hill adjacent to the hamlet, is the fourth iteration on its present location. The initial construction dates back to the 11th century, while the lower section of the tower, as well as the current church structure, were erected during the 14th century. According to folklore, it was intended for the church to be constructed in the meadow situated at the base of the hill. However, the labourers consistently discovered that the stones had been relocated to the summit on a daily basis. The determination was made that this occurrence was attributed to the divine intervention of a higher power, thus leading to the designation of “Godshill”. The construction of the upper section of the tower, adorned with pinnacles, took place during the 16th century.
The church is renowned for its mediaeval depiction of a Lily Crucifix through intricate carving.
