Alfred Tennyson, 1st Baron Tennyson FRS, born on August 6, 1809 and passed away on October 6, 1892, is widely regarded as one of the preeminent poets in English literature. He assumed the position of Poet Laureate for a significant portion of Queen Victoria’s reign. In the year 1829. In 1853, Tennyson entered into a rental agreement for Farringford House, located on the Island. Subsequently, in 1856, he proceeded to acquire the property through a purchase transaction.
In due course, he came to the realisation that an excessive number of awe-stricken visitors persistently bothered him at Farringford. Consequently, he made the decision to relocate to Aldworth, situated in West Sussex, in the year 1869.Nevertheless, he maintained ownership of Farringford and often frequented the estate throughout the winter seasons.
