1693 Capt.Grenville Collins
Captain Greenville Collins (sometimes written Greenvill or Greenvile) was a Royal Navy officer from England. He was Speedwell master in 1676. The crew escaped the shipwreck off Novaya Zemlya. Charles II commissioned him to examine Britain’s shores in 1681 after reading his diaries.
His 1693 atlas Great Britain’s Coasting Pilot included tidal tables, coastline panoramas, and 49 marine charts of England and Scotland. His cousin Freeman Collins printed and Richard Mount marketed The Coasting Pilot. Up until the 19th century, 21 editions appeared. The marine charts were inaccurate but far superior to prior ones. He was noted for being one of the first English hydrographers also one of the best.
