1673 Richard Blome Map of the Isle of Wight
Blome (1635-1705) was an English publisher, engraver, and cartographer.
His cartography flourished during the latter half of the 17th century. He produced a large number of maps, but none of them were original, and he was frequently accused of plagiarism despite making no effort to conceal his sources. His maps were beautifully and charmingly designed, and they still have a nostalgic appearance.
The Britannia, a compilation of county maps based on the most recent editions of mapmaker John Speed, was published in 1673 but was not a success. It was followed in 1681 by Speed’s Maps Epitomised, a collection of miniature maps. The majority of his work was engraved by Wenceslaus Hollar, Richard Palmer, and Francis Lamb, and later editions were embellished with dedications to county dignitaries.
