Isle of Wight, Jersey and Guernsey are part of the island group known as Anglesea. In his book “Tabularum Geographicarum Contractarum Libri septem” published in 1616, Petrus Bertius defined the concept of “contracts.”
Born in the Flemish village of Beveren in 1565, he had to flee several times to escape religious persecution. He eventually settled in Amsterdam, where he held positions as both a mathematics professor and a librarian at Leydon College. Ptolemy’s Geographia (based on Mercator’s version of 1578) benefited from his cartographic expertise.
Cartographer
Theologian, historian, geographer, and cartographer Petrus Bertius (Bert) grew raised in Beveren (Flanders). He joined the faculty of the University of Leyden as a librarian and mathematics professor in 1593. Other than the 28 maps engraved by Mercator for his 1578 edition of Ptolemy’s Geographia and the 14 maps of Ortelius’ Parergon, his most notable cartographic works are a miniature world atlas from 1600 and a pocket atlas dedicated to the architecture, the maps, and the views of towns of the German Empire from 1616 (101 town views and 26 engraved maps).
