America Wood

REF NR: 3266

America Wood is a 21.4 hectare biological Site of Special Scientific Interest on the Isle of Wight, notified in 1986. It derives its name from the oak trees grown here to build ships in the American War of Independence. This is almost certainly not to be the reason for the name, as the name Americas Wood is recorded on Andrews Map of the Island in 1769, 6 years prior to the outbreak of the War of Independence.
