Mercator Gerard, Mr
Cartographer
Born: 1512
Died: 1594

1. Gerard Mercator A cartographer and inventor Mercator during his lifetime was a visionary and suffered greatly for his teachings at the hands of the authorities and was imprisoned several times for heresy. The maps he developed were for the time extremely accurate and thus became very sought after by traders and merchants for navigational purposes. For the first time the maps used a “spherical” world, making them far more useful as merchants as well as the authorities could identify relative positions correctly for the first time.
