About The Isle of Wight Zoo

The Isle of Wight Zoo is home to the largest collection of tigers in Britain. A loyal ally to the tiger for over twenty five years this is an award winning zoo. At The Isle of Wight Zoo they also care for a broad range of different animals some of which include lions, leopards, lemurs, jaguars, monkeys, snakes, spiders and even lizards. All the animals at the Isle of Wight Zoo live in a large variety of naturalistic enclosures encouraging them to show natural behaviour. While you are visiting the Isle of Wight Zoo you can see The Tiger Sanctuary, Lemurland and maybe even Nature’s Nightmares. The Zoo has recently opened their ‘Kanha’ enclosure which has only just recently been described as one of the best new ones in the world. There is a devoted Education Officer who is always ready to help with school groups and the Zoo’s dedication to education and conservation are elaborated upon in popular keeper presentations taking place throughout the day.

Big Cats
Put simply “The Isle of Wight Zoo” is probably best known for work with its exotic cats. The Isle of Wight Zoo has been home to a large number of different members of the cat family. These have included lions, tigers, jaguars, pumas, cheetahs, servals, jungle cats and leopard cats. During the past at The Isle of Wight Zoo they have operated a very successful breeding programme for big cats. In recent years they have suspended their breeding programme to make way for a new centre for surplus or rescued big cats. For a number of years Tigers are the species of cat they have chosen to specialise in at The Isle of Wight Zoo. The collection of Tigers at the Isle of Wight Zoo is rapidly becoming one of the largest in Europe.

Primates
At The Isle of Wight Zoo they are probably best known for their collection of big cats however the Zoo is also home to a large collection of primates. Home to four species of the primitive Madagascan lemurs is ‘Lemurland’. Vulnerable animals they are point of focus for two of The Isle of Wight Zoo’s conservation campaigns. The Isle of Wight Zoo is also home to several species of monkeys. Some of these species are not currently threatened by the activities of humans but can be become subject to the ongoing pet trade here in the UK.
During the last fifteen years at the Isle of Wight Zoo they have been receiving greater recognition for their work to sustain some of most interesting of primitive Primates – the Lemurs of Madagascar. The first lemurs to arrive at the Isle of Wight Zoo did so back in 1990 this was part of a European breeding programme. During 2002 the keepers at the Isle of Wight zoo created Lemur land to draw attention to the plight of these rare and unique animals. There are currently four different species of lemur living in Lemur land.
