Isle of Wight County Lunatic Asylum

1. The first indication of the building being mapped is set at 1898, however was built in 1896 previously to this the "insane" were held at Carisbrooke Lunatic Asylum was and then moved to Knowle Hospital at Fareham, before the Island had its own asylum built at Whitecroft in 1896

2. Idiot starved  to death in the Isle of Wight  Workhouse. Such a headline as that above would today caused uproar, not only because the cause of death but for the language used, but in 1877 it was quite common indeed even around 20 years later when the Asylum was opened up.
