History Air Crashes of WWII

Allied - Spitfire Mk 1 -N3175

REF NR: 1915

This Spitfire flown by P/O W. S. Williams out of Tangmere 266 Squadron was badly beaten up after engaging a large enemy force who were attacking various targets in Portsmouth and Ventnor Radar station south of the Wight. Although reported as shot down it later became apparent that P/O W. S. Williams had nursed his stricken craft into the field at Bembridge.

On landing he managed to safely get out prior to the aircraft bursting into flames and being completely destroyed.

The day saw a great deal of action culminating in many allied aircraft being lost mainly falling into the Channel or the Solent.
