Calbourne Water Mill & Rural Museum

REF NR: 3336

We pride ourselves on the fact that our flour is ground the 'old fashion way'. Using only the power of water, Calbourne Water Mill produces approximately 30-40 tons of flour each year, supplying many shops across the Island, as well as delivering flour to the mainland, and of course, selling bags of flour and our bread directly to customers.

You could be surprised at just how much variety you'll find at Calbourne Water Mill, apart from the peacocks, ducks, moorhens and doves there is a beautiful ancient oak woodland which is home to badgers, red squirrels, foxes and many, many more birds and small mammals. Depending on the season, the stream at the bottom of the hill which runs behind the café is home to eels. That's without forgetting the large fish stock in the mill stream, if you buy a bag of fish food you can watch them almost leap out of the water to get it! On top of that we have some of the best views of the Island for those who are able and willing to take the short walk up to the top of the hill.

  • There is a small war museum and a number of little rural museums, displaying a selection of memorabilia from a bygone age, such as Granma's kitchen, Granfer's Shed, Dairy, Launderette, Fire Station, Old Bakery and much more!
  • The Water Mill has a Pottery with a family Clayplay area (We use air drying clay, so you can take home what you make; Only £2 per child)
  • There is an 18-hole putting green by the side of the mill stream, a bargain at just £1.00 per person!
  • There are boats for those who wish to enjoy a relaxing float down the stream or have fun in a pedaloe (£5.00 per boat/pedaloe for 30 minutes)
  • Why not have a go at croquet, or petanque, for £1 per person
