Old Newport Grammar School

REF NR: 3551

The Old Newport Grammar School is one of Newport’s most historic buildings and is said to be the site of a royal haunting. It is said that King Charles I stayed there for sixty days in 1648, before he was moved to London and sub sequentially tried and executed.

The old school has now become a youth centre. Most of the spooky goings on is focused on the first floor chamber where the king slept. On a number of occasions footsteps have been heard and ghostly figures seen moving around a candle lit room. It has even been reported that the King’s ghost has been sighted standing at the window.
