Newtown Woods

REF NR: 3555

Newtown used to be the capital of the Island. It has been said that the eerie cries of children have been heard in what is for the most part empty ancient woodland. The French attacked and destroyed the town in the 14th century and it never managed to recover.

Presently hardly anything is left of the town. Newtown was a ‘Rotten Borough’ up until the early 1800s. The cries that are occasionally heard deep in the woods could very well be the ghosts of children who were slaughtered by the French invaders.
