The Algerian was believed to have been been struck by a mine in the Solent just a mile of Egypt on the Isle of Wight in 1916. It is believed that there were no casualties. The 3837 ton ship was on its way to Avonmouth in ballast in a government operation, when it was struck by a mine. The mine is thought to of been laid by a German submarine.
