Bembridge Windmill (National Trust)

REF NR: 213

1. Bembridge Windmill, otherwise known as Knowle Mill, is a Grade I listed National Trust property found in Bembridge. It is the Island’s last remaining windmill. Built circa 1700 from stone with a wooden cap resembling an upturned boat, it has a four storey tower and four common sails. The windmill was last used to as a flour mill in 1897 at which point it changed to solely grinding cattle feed. It served this purpose until 1915 and was entirely wind powered during this time.

The mill was restored at least twice, in 1935 and 1959, and in 1962 it fell under the care of the National Trust, who again restored it and opened the doors to the public. Bembridge Windmill has been painted by numerous artists, including Turner who sketched it in 1795.
