The Pepper Pot

1 Looking like a medieval attempt to build a rocket, the St Catherine's Oratory or "Pepperpot" as its know locally is Britain's finest remaining Medieval lighthouse.This octagonal lighthouse is one of stone construction and around 4 stories in height and is Britain’s oldest Medieval lighthouse and was built in 1328 at the top of St Catherine’s Down. Known locally as the ”pepperpot” it once had a chapel attached to it whose monks duties were to maintain the  light.

The chapel in long gone and during the 17th Century Sir Richard Worsley paid for 4 buttresses added to support the overall structure.
