History Brannon Family Engravers

1831 Alum Bay and The Needles

REF NR: 1518

The Print:

If you look closely at the print on the far Tennyson down one can just make out the old needles lighthouse, which eventually was demolished as was too far away to be really affective in warning about the rocks. It was replaced with the current lighthouse in 1858/9  which stands on the needles ledge and can be seen still operating today.

The Brannons

George had four children, Alfred and Philip followed their father into the engraving business and were indeed very successful.  They produced not only engravings of the Island but of other local towns and cities including Southampton
