History Air Crashes of WWII

Allied - Spitfires Mk IV BR186 / BR174

REF NR: 1938

On a very misty day, 1st November 1942, a double tragedy within meters of each other happened. The two Spitfires from 616 Squadron Westhamoton, were flying over the southern reaches of the island when a bank of sea mist / fog caused them to fly too low and they both crashed within seconds of each other on the high ground at Stenbury Down, Wroxall. Flt Sgt. S. Smith flying BR186 died instantly and Flt Sgt. K Rodger in BR174 sustained serious injuries.
