History Air Crashes of WWII

Allied - Spitfire Mk IX MJ219

REF NR: 1955

North Grounds Farm, Chale, was the site of a fatal crash on 11th June 1994 involving a Mk IX Spitfire.

The aircraft, from 229 Squadron based at Tangmere, was being flown by South African Flt Lt. R. A. Cummings in low visibility, when it clipped the chimney of the farm house and careered onwards out of control - hitting the trees and crashing to the ground. It's thought that the pilot died immediately on this drizzly wet June afternoon, at around 14:45hrs.
