History Air Crashes of WWII

Allied Fairey Firefly Z2046

REF NR: 2062

The Fairey Firefly from 798 Squadron Fleet Air Arm flew into bad weather on the 1st March 1945 over Northgrounds Farm. Pilot S/Lrd. J.H. Sutton dropped down out of low cloud to try and find some sort of landmark as a place to put down, as emergency landing contignencies were required.

However his choice of timing was unfortunate as he was too low and clipped the roof of stables and a barn at Northgrounds Farm, causing the the plane to crash into the fields opposite and to burst into flames.  Pilot S/Lrd. J.H. Sutton was killed on impact.

Note: All images are of similar aircraft and not the specific plane in question.
