Quarr Abbey
Are you looking for an uplifting and interesting place to visit steeped in history and known for its peaceful atmosphere of serenity?
Part of the Cistercian Order and founded in 1132 the original ancient Quarr Abbey was founded by Baldwin de Redvers who was the 1st Earl of Devon and fourth Lord of the Isle of Wight. Quarr’s name derives from the word ‘quarry’ which was due to the fact situated nearby was a stone quarry. The original name for the ancient monastery was “the Abbey of our Lady of the Quarry”. An interesting fact is that stone from the quarry was used for the construction purposes of many ecclesiastical and military buildings. One of the most famous buildings which had some of its stone sourced from the quarry is the ‘Tower of London’. The local area was a place which had problems with piracy and in 1340 special permission was sought after and granted to fortify the local area from the threat of attack.
The first monks to arrive on the site that is now home to the ‘modern abbey’ arrived from Appuldurcombe at Quarr Abbey House on June 25th 1907 and set out to make ready the site by creating a kitchen garden. A monk name Dom Paul Bellot who was 31 at the time and an architect was given the responsibility of designing the new abbey. Led by the architect monk, local builders numbering 300 who had previously only built domestic houses constructed a building of magnificent stature and quality. After the construction of all the different sections of the abbey were made complete the Abbey church was finally consecrated on October 12, 1912.
